What to Check in a July Hive Inspection

A July hive inspection should answer seven practical questions:
- Is the colony queenright?
- Does the brood look healthy?
- What is the current mite level?
- Are food stores increasing, holding steady, or declining?
- Does the colony have the right amount of space?
- Are robbing or secondary pests becoming a problem?
- Does the colony have adequate water and ventilation?
You do not need to inspect every frame to answer them. When nectar becomes scarce, a shorter and more deliberate inspection can be better than leaving boxes open while honey odors attract attention from nearby colonies.
July conditions vary widely across the United States. A beekeeper in northern Wisconsin may still have a useful nectar flow while a beekeeper in North Carolina, Texas, or another hot, dry area may already be dealing with a dearth. Use this checklist as a starting point, then adjust it to local bloom conditions, weather, colony strength, and extension guidance.
Why July inspections are different
Many colonies still look large and productive in July. That can make it easy to assume that everything is fine.
The problem is that several risks can develop while the entrance remains busy. Mite populations may continue rising. Nectar flow may slow. Strong colonies may begin robbing weaker ones. A queen problem can become more expensive to fix as the season advances. Colonies may also begin moving toward the period when they must raise the bees that will carry them through winter.
Wisconsin's state apiary program describes July as a critical management month and recommends checking mites, stores, space, pests, water, ventilation, and robbing behavior. NC State's July guidance recommends keeping inspections relatively short and concentrating on whether the colony is queenright and healthy.
Start at the entrance
Spend a minute watching before opening the hive.
Look for bees returning with pollen, normal purposeful flight, fighting or tumbling, bees searching along cracks, dead or damaged bees near the entrance, wasps repeatedly approaching, heavy fanning, or a large cluster of bees hanging outside the hive.
A beard of bees on a hot afternoon does not automatically mean the colony is in trouble. Bees often gather outside when the hive is crowded or hot. The rest of the inspection should tell you whether you are seeing normal heat management or another problem.
Fighting, bees trying to enter seams, and frantic flight around a weaker colony deserve more attention because they may indicate robbing.
Confirm that the colony is queenright
You do not have to find the queen during every inspection.
Fresh eggs and very young larvae show that a queen was laying recently. That evidence is often more useful than spending another ten minutes moving frames simply to see her.
Open the brood area and inspect a small number of suitable frames. Look for one egg in a cell, young larvae with a healthy appearance, worker brood in an understandable pattern, brood at several stages, and bees behaving normally on the comb.
Do not diagnose a queen failure from one imperfect patch of brood. Brood patterns can be affected by food, genetics, disease, worker behavior, available laying space, and the age of the queen.
When you see no eggs or young larvae, record the date and consider the colony's recent history. A swarm, supersedure, split, or newly emerged virgin queen can create a temporary brood break. Ask a mentor, inspector, or local extension specialist when the timing is unclear.
Look at brood health, not only brood quantity
A strong colony does not need every frame packed with brood in July. What matters is whether the brood you find looks healthy and whether its amount makes sense for your location and season.
Watch for sunken, punctured, or unusual cappings; discolored or unhealthy-looking larvae; a sudden lack of brood without a known brood break; an unexpected amount of drone brood; unusual odors; or larvae and slime associated with hive pests.
A spotty brood pattern is a reason to look more closely, not a diagnosis by itself. Suspected brood disease should be referred to a state apiary inspector, extension specialist, or experienced local mentor. Avoid moving questionable frames into another colony.
Make the mite count a separate task
Looking at adult bees is not a reliable way to judge the colony's mite level.
The current Honey Bee Health Coalition guide recommends regular sampling and identifies an alcohol or soap wash as more reliable than a powdered-sugar shake. It advises monthly assessment during population increase and at least four checks from the colony's population peak through decline.
The guide uses mites per 100 adult bees as the standard measure. It recommends action when sampling exceeds a roughly 1% to 2% threshold, while stressing that thresholds vary by region. Local virus pressure, colony condition, season, and management goals can change the level of risk.
Record the date, colony, sampling method, approximate sample size, number of mites, resulting percentage, any previous management action, and the next test date.
Do not choose a treatment from a general blog post. Product registration, temperature limits, colony condition, honey supers, resistance concerns, and local regulations all matter. Use the current Honey Bee Health Coalition guide, your state extension program, and the product label.
Check whether the colony has enough food
Do not judge stores only by the number of honey supers. Examine what the bees have available around the brood area. Compare the result with local nectar conditions and the colony's population.
Ask whether fresh nectar is still coming in, whether bees are bringing pollen, whether stored resources are increasing or shrinking, whether the colony has enough food if the flow stops, and whether harvestable supers are still on the hive.
Wisconsin's July guidance specifically recommends checking pollen, nectar, and honey stores and warns against feeding sugar syrup while honey supers intended for harvest are on the hive.
Drought makes this check more important. Your own yard may differ from state or national conditions, so watch the colony and local forage rather than relying on a calendar alone.
Check space without automatically adding another box
A crowded colony may need room. A weak colony may need less space to defend.
Look at how many frames are occupied, whether the brood nest is blocked by stores, whether the current nectar flow justifies another super, whether the colony can patrol the space it already has, and whether unused boxes are creating hiding places for pests.
Adding space because the calendar says July can be as unhelpful as withholding space from a colony actively filling its equipment. Base the decision on the colony and local flow.
Watch for robbing and secondary pests
A nectar dearth can change colony behavior quickly.
Reduce the amount of time that honey is exposed. Avoid leaving burr comb, wet equipment, or spilled syrup in the yard. Close the colony promptly after completing the checks that matter.
Signs that deserve attention include fighting at the entrance, bees searching around lid seams, wax debris near the entrance, a weak colony becoming unusually defensive, increasing numbers of small hive beetles, or larvae and webbing in poorly defended comb.
NC State warns that small hive beetles and wax moths can take advantage when a colony begins to decline during summer. Wisconsin recommends watching for robbing and reducing entrances when needed.
Consider water and heat
Colonies need reliable access to water during warm weather.
A water source should be established before bees begin visiting a neighbor's pool, pet bowl, or outdoor faucet. Give them safe landing surfaces so they are not forced to land in deep open water.
Check that entrances are not blocked and that the equipment is assembled correctly. Avoid making major ventilation changes merely because you see a beard of bees. Observe the colony, local temperature, hive exposure, and whether the bees can move air normally.
A simple July inspection decision guide
Record and continue monitoring
The colony has eggs or young larvae, generally healthy brood, adequate stores, appropriate space, no strong signs of robbing or disease, and a mite result below the locally recommended action point. Set the next inspection or mite-test date before leaving the apiary.
Watch closely
You find declining stores, reduced brood without a clear explanation, an increasing mite result, more beetles than usual, heavy pressure from wasps, early robbing behavior, or a colony that is not occupying its available space. Shorten the follow-up interval and get local advice before the problem grows.
Seek prompt help
You find no evidence of recent queen activity and the timing is uncertain, suspected brood disease, active robbing, a mite level above the locally recommended threshold, a colony unable to defend its equipment, slimed comb, extensive larvae, or rapid population decline. Contact your local extension office, state apiary inspector, club mentor, or another qualified local resource.
Write down five things before you leave
- Queen activity
- Brood condition
- Mite result or next test date
- Food and super status
- The next action and deadline
A short record is better than trying to remember which of several similar colonies had the light stores, questionable brood, or rising count.
