Robbing Bees or Orientation Flights? How to Tell at the Hive Entrance

Heavy traffic in front of a hive does not automatically mean the colony is being robbed.
During orientation flights, young workers hover near the entrance, face the hive, and fly in widening arcs as they learn the location. Robbing usually looks less organized. Bees search along cracks and box joints, force their way toward stores, fight with guards, and may leave dead bees or shredded wax near the entrance.
The number of bees in the air is not enough to decide. Watch their direction, entry points, behavior, debris, and how the activity changes over several minutes.
This distinction matters most during a nectar dearth, after honey is exposed, or around a weak colony that may have difficulty defending its stores. Dearth timing varies across the United States, so use local bloom conditions and extension guidance rather than assuming every apiary enters dearth in July.
Orientation flights and robbing can look similar at first
Both can put a large number of bees in the air near the entrance.
An orientation flight may alarm a new keeper because the bees appear to hover, circle, and repeatedly approach the hive. In an active robbing event, the air may also be full of bees.
The difference becomes clearer when you stop looking at the total number and begin watching individual movements.

What orientation flights look like
Watch from the side so you do not stand in the flight path.
An orienting bee may leave the entrance, turn back toward the hive, and hover while moving through short side-to-side arcs. Those arcs become wider as the bee gains distance and height.
When many young bees orient at the same time, the air in front of the colony can look crowded. Afternoon orientation flights can be especially noticeable.
The useful signs are:
- The activity is centered in front of the normal entrance.
- Bees appear to be looking back toward the hive.
- The flight has a looping or expanding pattern.
- Bees are not aggressively testing every seam.
- There is little or no fighting.
- The landing board is not collecting unusual numbers of dead bees or shredded cappings.
- The activity settles after a limited period.
Orientation flights are part of how workers learn the hive and surrounding landmarks before regular foraging. They are not evidence by themselves that the colony is swarming or under attack.

What robbing looks like
Robbing happens when bees enter another colony to steal nectar, honey, or syrup.
The first robbers may be easy to miss. As successful bees return to their colony and recruit others, activity can increase quickly.
Bees are testing more than the entrance
Robbers may search along:
- The joint between boxes
- The edge of the lid
- Gaps near the bottom board
- Ventilation holes
- Damaged equipment
- Feeders
- Any opening carrying the odor of stores
Orientation activity normally stays associated with learning the hive entrance. Robbers are trying to find a way inside.
Guards are fighting
You may see bees wrestling, rolling, biting, or falling from the landing board.
A strong colony may repel early scouts. A weak colony may have too few guards to maintain the defense.
Wax debris appears
Shredded cappings or pale wax fragments near the entrance or on the bottom board can indicate that bees are opening stored honey.
Wax crumbs alone are not a complete diagnosis, but they strengthen the case when combined with searching flight and fighting.

The behavior continues or grows
Orientation flights often settle after a short period. Robbing may continue while accessible stores remain and can intensify as more bees are recruited.
The pressure is concentrated on a weak colony
Compare all hives in the yard.
A small nuc, queenless colony, diseased colony, recently disturbed hive, or colony with excess space may be less able to defend itself. Robbing is often connected to an underlying weakness rather than appearing randomly.
Use a five-minute entrance check
Before opening the colony, spend five minutes observing.
Minute 1: Watch the normal entrance
Are bees moving directly in and out, hovering calmly, or fighting?
Minute 2: Watch the seams
Look at the corners, lid, box joints, feeder, and bottom board. Bees persistently testing these areas deserve attention.
Minute 3: Check the ground and landing board
Look for dead bees, pieces of wax, torn cappings, or unusually heavy debris.
Minute 4: Compare neighboring colonies
Are several hives showing calm afternoon orientation flights, or is one colony receiving concentrated pressure?
Minute 5: Look around the apiary
Check for:
- Spilled syrup
- Open honey containers
- Exposed burr comb
- Wet supers
- Uncovered frames
- Feeding equipment leaking onto the hive
- Equipment that was not closed properly
This observation is usually more useful than immediately removing the lid and releasing more honey odor.
What to do when robbing is suspected
When the signs point to active robbing, work quickly and avoid turning the event into a full inspection.
A practical immediate sequence is:
- Close any hive or equipment that is open.
- Cover and remove exposed honey, syrup, comb, or wet supers.
- Clean visible spills.
- Reduce the entrance to a size the resident population can defend.
- Close accidental gaps between boxes or under the lid.
- Step back and reassess the flight pattern.
- Seek local help when the event remains severe or the colony cannot defend itself.
Do not begin transferring frames, searching extensively for the queen, or leaving several colonies open while robbing is underway.
Preventing the beekeeper from starting the event
Robbing is more likely when nectar is scarce, but beekeeper actions can supply the trigger.
Common risks include:
- Leaving a colony open longer than necessary
- Inspecting several hives at once
- Dripping syrup or honey
- Leaving wet supers in the open
- Setting honey frames beside the hive
- Using exposed or leaking feeders
- Giving a weak colony more equipment than it can patrol
- Failing to repair gaps in hive equipment

After the activity settles, find the reason
Stopping the visible pressure does not explain why the colony was vulnerable.
At the next safe inspection, consider:
- Is there recent evidence of queen activity?
- Does colony strength match the equipment it occupies?
- Are food stores adequate for current local conditions?
- Is there brood disease or another health concern?
- Are Varroa monitoring records current?
- Are small hive beetles or wax moths gaining ground?
- Was the hive recently split, requeened, moved, or harvested?
- Are boxes, covers, and feeders sound?

Robbing can also increase movement between colonies, creating opportunities for mites and pathogens to move with drifting or invading bees. That is another reason to investigate colony health after the immediate event is controlled.
Regional timing matters
Robbing can occur whenever bees find accessible stores, but dearth periods raise the risk.
In parts of the southern United States, summer robbing can become serious during July and August. In northeastern states, pressure may rise during a mid-summer dearth and again in early fall. Local rain, temperature, agricultural crops, elevation, and bloom timing can change the schedule.
A beekeeper in the mountains during a sourwood flow may see different behavior from a beekeeper in a hot, dry lowland yard during the same week.
Use the colony, local forage, and nearby experienced keepers as your calendar.

Record these details before deciding what you saw:
- Date and time
- Temperature and recent weather
- Whether a nectar flow or dearth is expected locally
- Which colony is affected
- Calm loops or frantic searching
- Activity at seams, lid, feeder, and bottom board
- Fighting or tumbling
- Dead bees
- Wax debris
- Exposed honey or syrup nearby
- Whether neighboring colonies show the same activity
- How long the behavior lasts
- Immediate action taken
- Follow-up inspection date
